If this works like some versions of D&D, they both suffer like 6d6 HP damage, the captain survives because he is level 15 so has enough HP, the boy is just level 2 and dies.
I was thinking more "Hitch-hikers' guide to the Galaxy" (or one of its sequels), when Arthur Dent learns to fly :D
